Stress Management Therapy
From a biological perspective, stress is defined as any physical or environmental pressure that elicits a response from an individual. In other words, stress has a purpose–it tells us when we need to change something in order to survive. However, stress reactions can end up in a place where it’s excessive relative to what’s triggering it. This accumulation of stress results in the negative effects on the body and mind that everyone is familiar with. Ongoing stress can disrupt sleep patterns, weaken the immune system, exacerbate pre-existing conditions, and trigger or worsen anxiety and depression.
In my Los Angeles-based therapy practice, I use a variety of evidence-based approaches to provide stress management therapy and ultimately help clients develop useful skills to cope with life’s pressures. A customized approach to stress therapy can help you feel more grounded and empowered in the face of work challenges, finances, relationships, or health issues.
How I Approach Stress Therapy
While many worry about common stressors like finances, stress is highly subjective. People vary in what causes them stress, so what may be “stressful” for one person may not cause the same effect on another. In therapy, it’s essential that your stressors are viewed from your perspective, and that your unique experience of stress is understood. In sessions, I provide a nonjudgmental space where we can focus on your response to your stressors.
In my practice, I use a variety of research-focused techniques. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a very powerful therapy for stress management, where we identify maladaptive patterns and replace them with practical, positive thinking and behavior.
We will work together to develop techniques for handling stress, learn helpful methods for relaxation and self-care, and maximize sources of social support. I consider each individual’s unique circumstances and set client-specific goals, altering my approach throughout the process as needed.
Benefits of Stress Therapy
A life without stress is unavoidable; however, stress should not immobilize your life. Therapy may improve your day-to-day lifestyle, empower you to achieve your goals, or simply help you enjoy life more. Additionally, my therapy does not just involve direct counseling; my goal with stress management therapy is to help my clients develop more effective internal and external dynamics to improve their mental health now and for years to come.
