Therapy for Anger Management

Strong emotions are often unpredictable, and rarely convenient. But of all the emotions, anger may be the most destructive to ourselves and those closest to us.

Unplanned, explosive outbursts in response to seemingly-minor triggers can be followed by such intense shame that seeking help seems impossible. But if you struggle with feelings of out-of-control rage, you are not alone. In my Los Angeles-based practice, I offer anger management therapy, and have seen that change is possible. No matter how much destruction your anger has caused, you are not hopeless—anger management therapy techniques can give you your life back.

My Approach to Therapy for Anger Management

One of the best approaches to anger management is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). With CBT, we will work together to identify triggers and reframe your reactions to perceived threats. This may involve relaxation training, in which certain muscle groups are tensed and relaxed during controlled breathing while thinking of common anger-provoking situations. Anger management therapy techniques may also incorporate coping skills training. For example, finding ways to defuse stressful situations with humor or training the mind to pause during tense situations before reacting.

Therapy for anger management can also be applied in individual or couples therapy, making it well-suited for therapy for relationships. It may also be incorporated into therapy for substance use and addiction, as appropriately managing substance use can decrease the chance of aggressive outbursts.

My anger management therapy in Los Angeles often takes place over multiple weeks for several reasons. First, I prefer a feedback-informed treatment plan in which I customize my therapy for each individual and make real-time changes as we progress. It may take time to fine-tune the therapy to your specific needs, but also to practice and master the techniques we cover. Getting durable results out of therapy takes time.

The Benefits of Anger Management Therapy

Therapy for anger management can help people grappling with their emotions regain control of their lives and maintain healthy relationships. When we reel in uncontrollable anger, we can begin to help you make decisions day-to-day with a little more ease. Slip-ups are not uncommon, but these should not be seen as failures. Anger is a difficult emotion to tame and takes practice. Fortunately, anger management therapy techniques can last for years and be applied to various stressful situations.
